Pinter & Martin is an independent publishing company based in the UK. We publish books in the UK and are distributed in the UK, the US and Australia. Pinter & Martin was founded on May 9th, 1997 by the writer and film-maker Martin Wagner and childbirth educator Maria Pinter, when we realised that Stanley Milgram's extraordinary book Obedience to Authority was out of print.

We also act as the production company of Martin Wagner's film projects, including the recently completed The Agent and the upcoming The Writer.

We specialise in books by authors who dare to think differently and challenge the status quo. Our main interests are pregnancy & childbirth and psychology books, many of which are reissues allowed to go out-of-print by larger publishers.

We have been trading since 1997 and pride ourselves in sending you the books as quickly as possible. We are also selling books as an Amazon trader and you can check the feedback we get from our Amazon customers here.

Yes, please send us your address and we put one in the post for you (or more if you want to give it to friends, colleagues or display them on your premises).

Please do! If you know of any books that are out of print and you feel deserve to be republished please drop us a line. We found two of our books this way.

We publish only a handful of books a year, many of which are reissues, and only books we fall heads over heels in love with, so frankly your chances are slim, and you're very likely to get a (hopefully mercifully quick) no. The worst part of our job is turning down perfectly good books, but please appreciate that we get offered lots these days and can be very picky. But we know how it feels to be rejected (see Martin's essay on the publishing business in The Guardian here, or The Agent page).

Our specialist areas are psychology, pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding and yoga. Please do not send us proposals which are miles removed from our list (please check out what we publish before you get in touch). Even if you are the new JK Rowling, please don't send it to us - we're not the right publisher for you, any manuscripts featuring wizards or goblins will be rejected straight away, even if you somehow managed to make them childbirth or psychology related. To get addresses of publishers in the UK suitable to send your work to we recommend the latest edition of Barry Turner's The Writer's Handbook.

If you decide that Pinter & Martin would be a suitable publisher for your book, please send Martin Wagner the whole book, or an outline with a few chapters by email or post (please include return postage if you want your material returned). It may take a while to get back to you, but please feel free to email or phone if you haven't heard from us in a few weeks.

No, sorry. We only produce plays and films from our own material.

Send us an email or letter and we will forward it to the author. It may take a considerable time to get any response, if appropriate. Some of our authors don't do email.

Our artwork designers include Bogus Machnik at Spiral Path Design, Anders Bundgaard at Klor, Thorsten Knaub and Andy Walker.

The stock levels on the website reflect the number of books we have at our offices - in most cases we have many more in our warehouse. Contact us if you have larger orders.
