For more than twenty-five years, until her death at the age of 91, Vanda Scaravelli was transforming bodies and lives with her innovative approach to yoga through the proper alignment of the spine. She listened to the body and worked with instead of against it. She used gravity, grounding, and breath to achieve dramatic improvements in health and well-being.
Scaravelli reminds readers that: “if you are kind to your body, it will respond in an incredible way.” Awakening the Spine offers a gentle way to achieve and maintain overall health and a naturally supple spine – at any age.
Lovingly revised by Vanda’s daughter Paola Scaravelli Cohen, based on the extensive notes Vanda left behind, Awakening the Spine is published for the first time as the author intended. With a new foreword by B.K.S. Iyengar, this is the definitive edition of one of yoga’s all-time classics.

This book won't teach you how to do yoga, but it might teach you why to do yoga. To start with I was a little disappointed with the book as I was looking for instruction but once I settled into the pace and what the book had to offer I found it inspiring and a strangely calming read!Could this book change your life? If you let it, yes. I'm not talking over night revolutionary change but seeds of change, if you nurture them they will grow and grow, if you ignore them, they will lie dormant, waiting for the right time. This book may appeal to beginners and those who already practice yoga and is a book I know I will read again and again, getting something different from it each time.

I have always been keen on Yoga and have used it through many areas of life - mostly through pregnancy and recovery and with my young son for his development. This book taught me a lot about what yoga is really about and has given me thirst to take it further. This would be a great gift for yoga addicts and a good source of information for those wanting to take their experiences further.

An Inspiring reminder of what yoga is about. This is a succinctly written and beautifully presented book. Some of Scaravelli's points about philosophy were familiar to me, but were presented in a fresh way, so that I felt like I was truely hearing them for the first time. The author managed to say a lot in short chapters that were direct, thought-provoking and at times poetic. Who can resist reading chapters with titles like "A meeting with death" and "The song of the body", "On beauty" and "Being young again"? I read the book quite easily and quickly, but felt the desire to go back and reread it to let the wisdom sink in slowly. Scaravelli stresses the importance of lengthening the spine, particularly at the waist and urges the reader to consider why we do yoga. For her it should not be to make our bodies healthy, but to give the body a holiday, doing something that it loves. She states that if you are kind to your body, it will respond in an incredible way (as evidenced by some of the amazing photographs of Scaravelli in advanced asanas.) Having covered many generally applicable tips for optimising one's physical yoga practice, the asanas section can afford to be quite condensed, yet it still gives good information about weight, lift and safe-practice in each asana. Scaravelli comes across as an attentive, caring and fun teacher and just reading this book has imbued my yoga practice with these same qualities as well as giving me much food for thought.
