It’s all in a day’s work for high-flying literary agent Alexander; manuscripts to read, deals to be done, celebrity clients to be taken out to lunch… but first there is an author to deal with whose latest book the agent thinks is, frankly, not up to scratch.

However he hadn't counted on the author's resourcefulness...

Performances:

The Agent was performed at The Old Red Lion, London (March '07), Trafalgar Studios, London (Summer '07), Torturmtheater, Germany (Autumn 08). Upcoming productions: Poland, The Netherlands. It was adapted into a film in 2009.

Reviews:

"A poisonously neat exposé of a vulture culture in which literature is a commodity rated not for its value but for its price." John Peter THE SUNDAY TIMES

**** "An absorbing play." Benedict Nightingale THE TIMES

"An amusing clash of literary wills... All writers and would-be writers are bound to shudder in pained recognition." EVENING STANDARD

"A merciless two-hander." WHAT'S ON STAGE

"A stinging insight into the world of selling art. And possibly souls." LONDON THEATRE GUIDE

"An exceptionally well-crafted, intelligent and enjoyable exchange exploring the nature of being an artist in a contemporary capitalist society, where substance is often overlooked and talent unrewarded... Kennedy excels as the self-effacing artist straining against a system where the agent is the bridge to the publisher, and 'most writers can't swim'. Martin Wagner's debut play is impressive and entertaining. Here's a writer who can swim." Belinda Williams - ROGUES AND VAGABONDS

  1. The Agent

Posted by Abraham Adeyemi on 6th Apr 2012

As a writer, I felt that I was able to relate to the protagonist's story and how in the face of adversity, difficulties and barriers that are perceived as unbreakable, we really will do anything to get noticed. It shed light on perceptions, misconceptions and did all of this in an entertaining way that evoked empathy; the key with any form of art.Would definitely recommend it, do not be deceived by its shortness - for what it lacks in length, it is rich with impact and as a reader, I just wanted to keep on going to find out whether there would be success for Stephen.
